DIY Chalkboard Tray

When I saw the chalkboard tray that Jill from Gypsy Brocante created I couldn't wait to make my own version. When I went to my local thrift store they didn't have a silver tray for less than $6 so I decided for my first attempt I would purchase a silver tin tray I had seen at the Dollar Tree last week. It worked PERFECTLY!!! I bought a quart of chalkboard paint at Walmart for about $9, but should be able to make about 50 trays with it so all in all the project cost me $1.20ish per tray!!! I apologize for the writing on the tray. We only had sidewalk chalk which is so large I could hardly write anything with it! These trays are SO easy, but a little time-consuming to make. I used 3 thin layers a paint and it took about 48 hours for everything to dry. My mom had a plate hook so I just attached it to the back and hung it on a wall in her kitchen. I plan on giving these as hostess gifts for parties we are invited to this year and possibly Christmas gifts for neighbors.

Very nice! plus depending on the type of metal tray you use it might be magnetic. I'd love to fill a whole wall with these in different shapes!
